Feeding Wildlife

Feeding Wildlife

While feeding wildlife may be fun and a good way to engage with wildlife, we strongly recommend against it for a number of reasons.

It can create a dependency for ‘human’ food, create dietary deficiencies like liver disease (common with feeding commercial bird mixes), create unwanted behavioural tendencies like being food aggressive or becoming too human friendly and create a breeding ground for diseases. Some foods, such as bread, can also cause death in some wildlife.

So what can you do?

Plant lots of native trees and shrubs for food, leave rocks and leaf litter in the garden to attract insects for birds and lizards to eat, add a bird bath for easy access to water and bathing.

You can let the wildlife come to you by recreating their natural habitat. Keeping it natural is best thing you can do.
